Enescu | Symphony No.1 · Suite No.3 'Villageoise'

BBC Philharmonic · Gennady Rozhdestvensky

All of Enescu's symphonies are French in style--that is to say they have three movements instead of four, and with a motto theme that recurs across the various movements. The First is a vital and enthusiastic work, ebulliently scored for a large orchestra. It's practically unknown--for no apparent reason other than the fact that it doesn't sound like one of the ever-popular Romanian Rhapsodies. The Third Suite is a very late piece, one of Enescu's last. In it, he indulges himself in feelings of youthful nostalgia and illustrates village scenes from his childhood in Romania. It's music of great poetry and depth, and listening to it is almost like eavesdropping on a private memory. These performances are excellent, as is the sound. --D.H.

Ex Cathedra · Jeffrey Skidmore

'The performances throughout can hardly be faulted. A lovely and varied sonority is created by soloists emerging and returning from the 14-strong choir. The instrumental contribution is equally distinguished, from sensitive continuo of sustained organ and more rhythmically engaging plucked strings, to a positive kaleidoscope of wind and brass in the larger numbers' --BBC Music Magazine

Haydn | String Quartets Op.64,5, 76,2 & 77,1

Jerusalem Quartet

Here are three of the greatest quartets of Haydn's maturity, all dating from the decade of the 1790s when he was the world's most famous composer. The 'Lark' shows him at his most lyrical, the 'Fifths' at his most intellectually formidable, while his penultimate completed quartet, op.77/1, with its deeply moving Adagio, is a fitting culmination to his peerless output in the genre.

"Haydn in the hands of the Jerusalem Quartet is no bewigged relic of the past but rather appears as an exciting composer, played as if freshly discovered. So here's a terrific sampling from Haydn's masterful late quartets, performed by an exciting young ensemble." --D.D. ClassicsToday.com

Brahms | Piano Concerto No. 1

Artur Rubinstein · Chicago Symphony Orchestra · Fritz Reiner

Artur Rubinstein's elegant 1954 recording of Brahms' "Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor" with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is a bona fide classic from the earliest days of stereo; this sumptuous album has been available for decades and has earned a permanent place in RCA's catalog. It reappears here in the SACD format and sounds cleaner and more detailed than ever before; yet the advanced technology only goes so far and this disc may disappoint audiophiles.

The playing from orchestra and soloist alike is of the highest class and, allied to the generous but not cavernous acoustics of the Grenoble Maison de Culture, has given us a disc that will no doubt give great pleasure to many, and not only Offenbachophiles. Under Minkowski's alert baton, rhythms bounce, tunes sparkle and dynamic contrasts make you jump . . . Pernoo copes with these outrageous demands with unfailing skill . . . --R.N. BBC Music Magazine

Vivaldi | The 37 Bassoon Concertos

Daniel Smith · English Chamber Orchestra · Zagreb Soloists · Philip Ledger · Tonko Ninic

“Congratulations to Smith are in order for achieving what no other bassoonist has yet attempted on disc, and to ASV for backing the project.” --Gramophone

Each of the five discs is programmed to ensure maximum contrast and variety for those who wish to sit through, say, seven or eight concertos at a stretch. I wager that listeners will often return to discs three through five, for the Zagreb Soloists under Tonko Ninic's guidance bring more characterful bite, color, and accentuation to Vivaldi's orchestral writing than the less individual proficiency of Philip Ledger's excellent English Chamber Orchestra. Bassoon soloist Daniel Smith commands his unwieldy instrument to the point where it's all too easy to take his suave tone, superb breath control, and idiomatic flair for granted.

C.Ph.E. Bach | Sanguineus and Melancholicus · Sonatas

Florilegium

"What fascinates us in the music of C.P.E. Bach is his peculiar way of combining his own very dignified brand of seriousness and a often positively disruptive concentration on dramatic surprese of the moment - at the expense of the symmetry and formal organization the seriousness leads us to expect. L'Album des Six

Emily Beynon flute · Andrew West piano

'An ingenious piece of programming by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's (Welsh) principal flautist and the pianist Andrew West: they have gathered together the complete works for flute and piano by the group of French composers known as Les Six and titled the record after the only work - a set of solo piano pieces - on which all six collaborated. Although the "collectivisation" of these six musical personalities was the brainwave of a music critic in 1920, the flute and piano pieces recorded here date from the early 1920s to the 1970s. Poulenc's dazzling Sonata (1957), brilliantly played by Beynon and West, is the highlight of an absorbing and hugely entertaining disc.' --The Sunday Times

Bach | Violin & Voice

Hilary Hahn · Matthias Goerne · Christine Schafer

To the vocal lines of arias and duets, Bach composed gorgeous violin passages. In Bach: Violin & Voice, Hilary Hahn records these passages exquisitely, sharing this album with soprano Christine Schäfer and baritone Matthias Goerne, both also renowned Bach exponents. Selections from such masterpieces as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor are rendered with an unearthly beauty and a reverence that add to this recording's historical significance In truth, this album features not two but three singers--the magical tone from Hahn's Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume conveys a beauty which can be attributed to a golden voice.

Shostakovich | Symphonies Nos. 1 & 15

Mariinsky Orchestra · Valery Gergiev

Over 45 years separate the composition of Symphonies Nos 1 and 15 and yet both exude creativity and Shostakovich’s dark wit. The First Symphony owes much to the influence of Shostakovich’s Russian predecessors including Tchaikovsky and Scriabin. However it also reflects contemporary artistic life and the optimism of the early years in the Soviet Union. By contrast the final symphony is a more bitter work, drawing on many of the themes that recur throughout Shostakovich’s career and yet never resorting to melodrama.

‘The orchestra under Gergiev is terrific. Doom laden brass, jaunty woodwind and clattering percussion all come together with total conviction’ --Daily Telegraph

Schnittke | Viola Concerto · Trio Sonata

Yuri Bashmet · Moscow Soloists · London Symphony Orchestra · Mstislav Rostropovich

The Soviet composer Alfred Schnittke wrote his Viola Concerto in 1985 for Yuri Bashmet, whose magnetic musical personality seems to inform much of the content. The letters of the violist`s surname in fact play a motivic role in the sometimes expressionist scenario, with its bleak and withdrawn murmurings giving way to violent, pastiche-like gestures (Mahler and Vivaldi are the composers most prominently evoked). Bashmet`s string-orchestra arrangement of Schnittke`s 1985 String Trio may be less persuasive, but the reading is also first-rate.

Shostakovich · Franck | Violin Sonatas

This is an unusual but very exciting issue. GRAMOPHONE EDITOR'S CHOICE

'Her [Hewitt's] playing is absolutely captivating: she decorates the solo part with playful, come-hither ornamentation - twirls, flutters, arabesques - and yet it never disturbs the clear, logical path she forges through the course of each work. Mozart | Gran Partita

Champs-Élysées Orchestra · Philippe Herreweghe

Mozart wrote the "Gran Partita" Serenade between 1781 and 1784 (the actual date of its creation remains shrouded in mystery, as well as its reason or occasion). Though music historiographers cannot determine the actual facts about Mozart's work, everyone can agree upon the uniqueness of Mozart's "Gran Partita" Serenade. While most serenades were composed to be played lightly in the background of garden parties, aristocratic dinners, and social events, Mozart's seven movement serenade is anything but background music. Just by looking at the performers, you know this serenade is special. Mozart wrote it for for two oboes, two clarinets, two basset horns, two bassoons, four horns and a double bass. Its opening, fanfare-like chords followed by a lyrical clarinet signify the quality and magnitude of the piece.

Rachmaninov | Piano Concertos Nos. 1-4 · Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

Earl Wild · Royal Philharmonic Orchestra · Jascha Horenstein

Two caveats for prospective customers: One is that Earl Wild makes the once-standard "traditional" cuts in the finale of the Third Concerto; second is that these classic 1965 performances also are available on the Chesky label in less brilliant but more naturally equalized transfers. Chandos, however, offers the better bargain. More importantly, Wild is in dazzling form throughout. You'll rarely hear the First and Fourth Concertos sparkle with equal panache and rhythmic acuity, while the pianist's fusion of poetry and flair add up to a Paganini Rhapsody that leaves just about all stereo versions behind. Jascha Horenstein's incisive, colorful support is a major asset, and the Royal Philharmonic plays beautifully for him. If you don't mind the Third Concerto cuts (or already have Martha Argerich's landmark third), these classic performances only get better with age, and the sonics are still terrific. Go for it, piano fans!

J.S. Bach | Concerts avec plusieurs instruments V

Café Zimmermann

Bachs suites and concertos have long been part of concert repertoires. It is however interesting to mentally replace their first executions in the context of the time, so different from what we see on present day stages. Apart from at the courts, whatever their size, there were no permanent orchestras in Bachs time and age. Café Zimmermann has brilliantly recreated the spirit of these orchestras, allowing each musician (chosen among the best on the European baroque scene) to express himself. Penultimate opus in this outstanding series, this is the first time we hear Café Zimmermann in such a large formation. This in no way harms the characteristic energy of the ensemble and we discover a Bach more alive than ever.
