Turina | Orchestral Works

Hamburg Symphony Orchestra · Miguel Gómez-Martinez

Gomez-Martinez is most comfortable with the gentle, impressionist side of Turina's art....The Spaniard finds more repose in the atmospheric introduction [of `Sinfonia Sevillana'], while the faster episodes have a vigor and balletic grace that somehow eludes [Antonion de] Almeida. Gomez-Martinez also has the advantage of the rich, burnished sonority of the Hamburg strings. --American Record Guide

Ravel | Boléro · Rapsodie espagnole · Daphnis et Chloé, Suite No.2 · Pavane · La valse

Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal · Charles Dutoit

There is a stunning variety to Ravel's musical output, and the wealth of compositional ideas is well archived on the present disc performed by the Montreal Symphony conducted by Charles Dutoit. Ravel is one of the most versatile composers of the 20th century; he is a compositional chameleon. His 'Rapsodie espagnole' is truly Spanish and his La Valse smacks of 19th century Vienna. His 'Boléro' which was used in the hit movie "10," is palpably erotic, a fifteen minute crescendo. Fabulously performed.

Narciso Yepes · Recuerdos

Godelieve Monden guitar II · Philharmonia Orchestra · London Symphony Orchestra · English Chamber Orchestra · Luis-Antonio García Navarro

In recuerdos (Memories) we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the birth of the great Spanish guitarist Narciso Yepes (1927-1997), the "master of the 10-string guitar", with acclaimed recordings of three popular concertos and wide range of solo repertoire. Included are two extended works by Telemann and Fernando Sor that are appearing on CD for the first time.

Tchaikovsky · Piano Concerto No. 1 | Rachmaninoff · Piano Concerto No. 3

Arcadi Volodos piano · Berliner Philharmoniker · Seiji Ozawa · James Levine

Here the big-toned Arcadi Volodos takes on one of the most familiar masterpieces of the piano repertoire, the Tchaikovsky First. It's a piece that is so familiar we tend not to listen to it very carefully, but Volodos finds subtleties and emphasizes interesting ideas. Seiji Ozawa and the Berlin Philharmonic are as impressive as the pianist. Volodos is the real thing, a flamboyant virtuoso with a great sense of style, tonal variety, and the kind of dexterity that draws attention to itself without taking your mind off the music. Rachmaninoff's Third is perfect repertoire for him, and he delivers an astonishing performance that combines fluency with weight.

Barber · Korngold · Walton | Violin Concertos

James Ehnes violin · Vancouver Symphony Orchestra · Bramwell Tovey

It's an inspired coupling, as well as a generous one, to have these three high-romantic concertos together. James Ehnes gives superb performances, bringing out their full emotional thrust without vulgarity or exaggeration. His playing has always been impressive on disc, but here he excels himself in expressive range as well as tonal beauty, with expressive rubato perfectly controlled. --Gramophone

Fasch | Orchestral Works

Tempesta di Mare

“The concert performances [on Fasch Orchestral Music] are fresh, vibrant, and spontaneous, representing the perfect marriage between musical instinct and meticulous scholarship. I don’t know what waits for us in terms of future recordings by Tempesta di Mare, but I’m certainly willing to be patient, especially if content and commitment are even half this good.” --Fanfare

J.S. Bach | Harpsichord Concertos

Bob Van Asperen harpsichord · Melante Amsterdam

Here once more are Dutch harpsichordist Bob van Asperen's early '90s recordings of the complete harpsichord concertos of J.S. Bach. Accompanied by the one-player-to-a-part Melante Amsterdam ensemble and recorded by Virgin, these were superb performances in their time and they still sound superb in this four-disc Virgin set.

Liszt | Orchestral Works

Shura Cherkassky · Berliner Philhrmoniker · Herbert von Karajan

'Shura Cherkassky's glittering 1961 recording of the 'Hungarian Fantasia' is an affectionate performance with some engaging touches from the orchestra, though the pianist is dominant and his playing is superbly assured. The rest of the programme is comparably charismatic.......A set showing Karajan and his Berlin orchestra at their finest' --The Penguin Guide

Telemann | Wind Concertos

Musica Antiqua Köln · Reinhard Goebel

Colourfully imaginative and stylistically authoritative performances such as we have here, are unlikely to disappoint anyone at all attracted to Telemann's music. The nuances of texture and colour, the rhythmic vitality and the expressive qualities of these concertos are robustly, even at times earthily realized by this talented ensemble. A fine achievement. --Gramophone

Lettere Amorose

Magdalena Kožená mezzo-soprano · Private Musicke · Pierre Pitzl

She brings a natural flair and easy virtuosity to the works, and, of course, a beautiful and distinctive sound . . . The marvelous consort Private Musicke, directed by Pierre Pitzl, partners Kozená brilliantly, with colorful and richly textured accompaniment . . . "Lettere Amorose" has garnered considerable praise from critics, and rightly so: Add me to the list of fans. --San Francisco Classical Voice

William Primrose | Viola Transcriptions

Roberto Díaz viola · Robert Koenig piano

These arrangements for his own instrument by the viola virtuoso who commissioned Bartok's concerto are heard literally on that instrument. Diaz used to be principal viola of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and there came into possession of Primrose's Amati. It was restored to a pitch of perfection Primrose would not have known, and its tonal richness is superbly demonstrated. The tone changes subtly from piece to piece. The haunting quality of Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras No 5 is not the same as that of Tchaikovsky's None but the Lonely Heart, and different again from Traume, one of Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder. There's plenty of Spanish fun too. The Sunday Times, London

Nino Rota | Two Piano Concertos

Massimo Palumbo · I Virtuosi Italiani · Marco Boni

Both these works are unashamedly Romantic and nostalgic in style. The E minor Piano Concerto was composed in 1960. Rota composed four piano concertos, but the date of the one in C major seems to be in doubt. It's earlier than 1960, and is a sparer, jauntier work, in mood more reminiscent of the 1920s. It, too, presents a dialogue between the questlike piano part and the orchestra asserting a darker mood. Both concertos are played by Massimo Palumbo with brilliant technique; the recorded sound is excellent. Gramophone

Fraser Trainer · Between The Notes | Knots

Between The Notes with Viktoria Mullova

This is, I suppose, technically crossover but I don’t actually care. Between the Knots is a musical collective consisting of Matthew Barley, cello and director, Paul Griffiths, guitar, Fraser Trainer, keyboards, Sam Walton, percussion, and Peter Whyman, winds. Guest artist Viktoria Mullova plays on the mini concerto for violin and ensemble, Knots, and the arrangement of Human League’s 1980s hit, Love Action. In any case, I enjoyed it enormously and recommend it without reservation. Fanfare

Ippolitov-Ivanov | Orchestral Music

Hasmik Hatsagortsian · Vardouhi Khachatrian · Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra · Loris Tjeknavorian

Collections of Ippolitov Ivanov's music have appeared before on Marco Polo and Naxos but this new AS&V issue has a good variety of the unknown alongside the rare. Tjeknavorian rounds off with brisk and authoritative accounts of the now famous Turkish March and Turkish Fragments, the latter's "During the Rest' is quite magical here. At almost 78 minutes, no one can complain of being short changed and the music, if not of top-drawer quality, is enjoyable and melodious. All Russophiles should snap this up without delay. Chopin | Piano Concerto No.1 · Fantaisie op.49 · Fantaisie-Impromptu op.66 · Berceuse

Maria João Pires · Chamber Orchestra of Europe · Emmanuel Krivine

Pires’s approach to the concerto is ardently lyrical, giving her spacious sense of rubato and radiant singing tone the greatest expressive freedom. If the piano’s first entry hardly grabs your attention, Pires’s wonderfully pliable phrasing and bell-like sonority soon win you over. She has a magical way with music of gentle expressiveness, and her bel canto in the central Romanze is ravishing; moreover, in passages of sublime simplicity she avoids preciousness by maintaining a resilience of line and a firmness and clarity to the tonal fabric. This is a thoroughly rewarding disc. Gramophon

C.P.E. Bach · Lebrun · Mozart | Oboe Concertos

Paul Goodwin · The English Concert · Trevor Pinnock

Paul Goodwin is one of the most accomplished and musicianly players of eighteenth-century oboes around, and one who achieves his effects without attempting to conceal the bold, fruity character of his instruments. His articulation and phrasing are detailed and well-judged, while fine breath control allows for a high level of sustained expressiveness, not just in the slow movements but also in moments such as the opening messa di voce of the Mozart's first movement. At other times he is suitably bold and confident, and he is excellently backed up throughout by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert, whose polished playing strikes a good balance between brightness and blended tone. A thoroughly enjoyable disc. L.K.

Benny Goodman | B.G. in Hi-Fi

B.G. in Hi-Fi was recorded five years after the clarinetist had his last permanent big band (he'd work mostly with smaller combos from here on out), but all the players found on this disc are superb. And, though the big-band style may have been way past its prime in '54, Goodman certainly isn't. On tunes like "Get Happy"--one of the more spirited romps on this disc--he swings with vigor and topnotch playing. Eight cuts feature a big band; the remaining 12 are quintets. Four previously unreleased tracks (including a great rendition of "Ain't Misbehavin'" played by his quintet) are included. J.V.

Baby Sleep · 24 tracks to soothe you into slumber

I think this music is intended for adults, though the photo on the cover is of a sleeping baby. In any event, Schumann's work, Scenes From Childhood, Op. 15, featured here is more likely to bolt you out of bed than put you to sleep, as the mike is far too close to the piano being played by Cyprien Katsaris. Purcell's Adagio from The Indian Queen is magnificent, performed by John Elliott Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists. The Weird Award goes to triple harpist Tim Hobrough and lutenist Stephen Barber for their bizarre, spiky rendition of Minuets Nos. 4 and 5 from the Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach. I would like to meet Bill Holland, producer of all these Atlantic Records classical compilations. He's programmed Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 on three different CDs, billed alternately as sensuous, romantic, and now here: good for a long snooze. --G.F

Saint-Saëns · Chausson · Ysaÿe

Tedi Papavrami · Philharmonique de Liège Wallonie · François-Xavier Roth

Papavrami strikes an ideal balance between seduction and precision, never sappy, never rigid. His tone is warm and enveloping from the open G string to the heights of the E string. Vibrato is intense but not overdone, as is rubato. Papavrami technical skills are also more than ample to dazzle his audiences. The orchestra, whose parts in all of these works is almost entirely accompanimental, provides a sensitive, well-balanced backdrop for Papavrami. AMG

French Concertos for Two Pianos | Milhaud · Poulenc · Casadesus

Piano Duos Genova & Dimitrov · SWR Rundfunkorchester Kaiserslautern · Alun Francis

'The Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra by Francis Poulenc, composed in 1932, is clearly one of the most popular works of this relatively rare genre. Brilliantly sparkling wit, pointedness, and virtuosity make this concerto a listening feast. The Genova & Dimitrov Piano Duo presents this work on this new CD featuring three works of French provenance, since Darius Milhaud and Robert Casadesus also wrote double piano concertos. What unites the three composers is a shared aesthetic standpoint deeply rooted in neoclassicism.' amazon.com

Zelenka · Pisendel | Concerti et al.

Freiburger Barockorchester · Gottfried von der Goltz

'It was a good idea to combine works by these two composers of the Vivaldi period who both worked in Dresden. Of the two, Jan Dismas Zelenka is the more quirky and unpredictable. The music on this CD includes Pisendel’s Violin Concerto in D with virtuoso parts for the French horn in the opening movement, and a Sonata in C minor for oboes, strings and continuo. The performances by the Freiburg orchestra on period instruments are very fine and the recording excellent. Lovers of the Baroque should investigate this disc, on which much scholarly and musical effort has been expended.' BBC Music Magazine

Airs d'Opéras Français

Natalie Dessay · Orchestra de l'Opéra de Monte-Carlo · Patrick Fournillier

French soprano Natalie Dessay is one the stars of today’s operatic world, thrilling audiences as both a singer and an actress. Now an admired interpreter of bel canto and lyric heroines such as Lucia di Lammermoor, Marie (La Fille du régiment), Amina (La sonnambula), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Manon, Juliette and Ophélie (Hamlet), Dessay originally made her reputation with showpiece coloratura roles such as Offenbach’s Olympia, Mozart’s Queen of the Night and Strauss’ Zerbinetta.

'The Archicembalo Ensemble offers a portrait of Meneghetti's instrumental writing. This recording presents five of his six concertos for violin and strings, preserved in the Fondo Malaspina of the Archivio di Stato in Verona. The concertos adhere to the traditional form of three movements--allegro-adagio-allegro--inherited from Vivaldi and kept alive in the following century, albeit with a myriad of variations and exceptions.' Antonio Vivaldi | Complete Lute Music

Jakob Lindberg · Nils-Srik Sparf · Monica Huggett · Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble

'this by far the best account of this music to date. Not only is Lindberg's own contribution exemplary in unaffected, stylistic felicity and tone, adorned with tasteful embellishment (as is that of Span), but the use of period instruments and discreet lozenging of notes helps in keeping the lute audible at all times. Indeed, this is some of the best period bowed-string playing I've heard in a long time, warm, and free from the 'white noise' that still haunts many such performances.' 'The lute works of Vivaldi are well-trodden territory, but no one has yet travelled over it so beguilingly as Jakob Lindberg.' Gramophone

Antonín Rejcha | Compositions for Flute and Fortepiano

Andreas Kröper · Geoffrey Lancaster

'Kröper is a historically aware musician who takes a very serious view of his responsibilities towards his chosen composers. These sympathetic performances in close rapport with Geoffrey Lancaster are carefully balanced on suitably chosen instruments and should give everyone with open ears great pleasure. The sonata (c.1804) is fairly simple, in keeping with post-Mozart Viennese taste, and the Duo Concertant of some 16 years later is more emotional and experimental.' Classical.net

Mozart | Violin Concertos 1, 3 & 4

Viktoria Mullova · Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

'Viktoria Mullova's lithe and limpid playing in this recital of three Mozart Violin Concertos is just about ideal. Mullova's authentically informed though certainly not dry or academic approach gets right to their gorgeously lyrical heart as few others have done before. Doubling as both soloist and director of the OAE, Mullova adds the best of period-instrument practice to her formidable technique, bringing not only assurance but a lively grace to bear on these delightful works.'
